Scientific knowledge about natural processes is advancing more rapidly than educational programs can keep pace. New education efforts are
needed for all audiences. This mission augments new initiatives and
approaches to fisheries management and other public policy arenas,
and addresses educational needs that foster sound economic development.
Goal
Improve public understanding of Alaska's marine environment.
Objectives
• Develop a comprehensive statewide marine education program.
• Develop educational summer courses, in-services, classroom
talks, and curricula in marine topics for teachers and students.
• Develop educational programs in Russia and other Pacific Rim
countries.
• Produce videos and publications for short courses, formal courses, and broadcasts to raise awareness of fisheries and how they fit into
the global ecosystem.
• Produce publications and interactive video programs for general audiences to increase understanding of marine systems.
• Develop a Pacific Rim fisheries course through UAF and for
rural Alaska.
• Develop short courses on public involvement in the fisheries
management process.
• Deliver field courses to provide better understanding of marine resources and issues.
