Why I like living in Alaska

Having grown up in flat corn country, I love that I can wake up every morning and be surrounded by beautiful mountains and clean waters.

What I do for fun

There are so many things that I enjoy doing and I am sure many that I have yet to discover that I hesitate to limit my list here—but for a few things: fishing, camping, reading a good book, sitting by a campfire, BBQs, driving out to see a great sunset, horseback riding… and the list goes on.

A favorite Alaska memory

My black lab and I were headed down to the Kasiloff River to go dipnetting. We needed to pull over and make a pit stop. We both got out of the truck and trotted off into the woods to take care of business; he went one way and I went the other. As I came out of the woods I noticed another truck in the pull-out. I waited a moment or two for my dog to show up, and when he didn’t I began to whistle for him. He wasn’t coming so I started to call him, “Bear!” “Bear!” At the same time that my dog came bolting from the woods running to me, so did 3 men with their pants only partly pulled up around their thighs. As I tried desperately to contain my laughter I was trying to explain that I was calling my dog. None of them seemed to see the humor in the situation, but I most certainly did. As my dog and I got into my truck and drove away I found myself almost laughing too hard to drive.

Why I love my job

There is a lot of variety and the expression of ideas is welcomed. There are opportunities for learning and growth. There is some flexibility, which allows me to be a single mom to the best of my ability.
